Basic HTS

The required minimum criteria for applicants:

  • Grade 12.
  • Willingness and ability to apply course knowledge in current work situation and future care.
  • Course duration: 10 days

Outline
The following topics are covered in the theory sessions:

Module 1 – Facts about HIV and AIDS
Module 2 – Counselling Skills
Module 3 – Principles of counselling and testing services
Module 4 – Pre and post-test counselling including PREP and PEP
Module 5 – HIV rapid testing (HRT)
Module 6 – Provide ongoing counselling and support to individuals infected or affected by HIV and AIDS (National HTS policy and Guidelines)
Module 7 – Issues on death of a spouse, parent, or caregiver

The course material includes a CHAPS HTS Counselling learner guide, pre- and post-course tests, HTS Guidelines, competency report form, client log sheet and feedback/evaluation form.

Competency will be assessed based on the number of clients counselled and tested, the ability to provide good HIV counselling and testing sessions and trainees deemed competent will be certified.

VMMC Counselling and testing

Patients are required to undergo HTS before undertaking a VMMC procedure. HIV testing remains a crucial part of the HIV prevention package and the current 95-95-95 programme. This course is therefore, designed to provide counsellors and individuals who are interested in counselling with the basic knowledge and skills for HIV testing and counselling as part of the VMMC or 95-95-95 programmes.

Applicant profile

  • Grade 12 or a Basic Counselling certificate is recommended.
  • Willingness and ability to apply course knowledge in current work situation and future care.
  • Course duration: 5 days

Course content:

  • The phases of the VMMC continuum.
  • The purpose of ISC/C during each phase.
  • How to conduct ISC/C during each phase.
  • The core content covered during each phase.
  • Considerations for clients refusing to test for HIV, clients testing negative, and those testing positive.
  • Communication with the client during screening.
  • The elements that must be included as part of the informed consent process.
  • What to do when a client is a minor.
  • Communication with the client during the MC procedure.
  • The objectives of immediate post-procedure and follow-up visit counselling.
  • The key messages that should be included during immediate post-procedure and follow-up visit counselling.
  • How to improve compliance with abstinence during health period and/or mitigate elevated risk of HIV transmission.
  • The importance of using time during follow-up to address men’s broader health needs.
